This week’s submission comes from artist Cassondra. You can view more of her work at She has drawn this in graphite and charcoal. The design and detailing of this is beautiful!! I really like how the bottom left rose fades from the background into the rose with no harsh lines.

Taking a look at some things we can adjust to improve on this even more, there isn’t much! First would be the edges. If you take a bit more time with a very sharp pencil, you can create much cleaner, sharper edges on the roses and pearls. This will help them to stand out even more. Right now everything has a sort of soft, slightly out of focus look. Just cleaning up your edges will bring this into focus. The great thing about that is that it doesn’t require you to start over, just to keep working on what you already have.

My next tip would be to hype up the contrast a bit more. I like the adjustments you made from your reference photo given how dark the roses were in that, so good call on lightening yours up more, but you can take that even a little further by making your darks a touch darker and making your whites really white, especially on the pearls.

I wasn’t kidding when I said there wasn’t much I would adjust! Really the main thing is to spend a bit more time on what you have here. The adjustments I’ve suggested won’t take too long because you’ve already done the hard work! You’ve got your detailing and shapes blocked in already, the rest is easy!
