In this video I’m going to show you how to draw hair in colored pencil! This is part one of my fan art drawing Jon Snow from Game of Thrones.
For this tutorial I’m using
Polychromos in Cold Grey, Dark Sepia, Cold Grey I, Warm Grey VI, black, cold grey IV, warm grey II, Warm Grey III, walnut brown, nougat, paynes grey, Helioblue-Reddish
Luminance in White, violet Grey, Sepia 10%, Steel Grey, French Grey, Burnt Siena 10%, Paynes Grey 30%
Derwent Drawing Chinese White
** I may not have used all of those colors, those are just what I had pulled from my set for the hair**
Touch Up Texture and Titanium White Powder from Brushandpencil.com These two products can be shipped internationally, but you may have to email the company to get an invoice. I’m not sure if their website will take overseas orders on its own.
Stonehenge (sold in the large individual sheets that I cut down to size)
Mona Lisa Odorless Paint Thinner (gamsol works the same if that is easier for you to get)
This is the color swatch I made for the hair colors. Making this in photoshop, swatching colors from the original reference photo makes it much easier to choose which colors I need for drawing hair, no matter the color. In this case with black hair you can see there are MANY more colors used besides black. If you were to use straight black the hair would be very flat and unnatural looking.
The 2 hour version of this tutorial is available for supporters on Patreon to watch now!! I’ve got a VERY large chunk of this video done in real time so you can really see how I’m making my pencil strokes and all the detail for that section of the hair. If you’re unfamiliar with Patreon, you get access to my 1-2 hour long tutorials every single week for as little as $4/month!
