Am I worried about AI copying my art? Is there anything I can do about it? Right now the AI art thing is weird. You have these two camps of folks when it comes to this topic. One camp insists AI doesn’t “copy” anyone’s art, it’s “inspired” by it. No, you’re just playing word games at that point. Walks like a duck, quacks like a duck…it’s a freaking copyright violation! Unfortunately, even though artists can not legally copy or “be inspired” #wordgames by another modern artist’s work , the AI is getting away with that very thing due to out-of-date legal technical loopholes.
The law absolutely needs to catch up to technology. I have no idea how long that will take.
The other camp are artists having genuine meltdowns online both in videos and on forums making the claim that artists are losing money and that it’s impossible to make a living as an artist if people just use AI art.
They’re sharing fan fiction made up on reddit to drum up fear. These made-up stories claim things like one artist had been working for months on a book for someone. He had a partial payment. When he was almost done he was fired and told they would just take the work he did so far and use AI to generate the rest to save money, finishing with “I know you’ll understand”. ARE. YOU. SERIOUS?! Why do people fall for this crap? This didn’t happen! Why do I know? That last sentence “I know you’ll understand”. NO ONE WOULD SAY THAT! Reddit is FULL of these made-up stories. You can tell by the number of weird details they include that don’t make sense.
People are making videos literally crying over this stuff. News flash, making a living as an artist has always had its challenges. AI doesn’t change that. I wish these people would stop trying to discourage young people from becoming artists over their irrational fears!
We all need to be reminded “Don’t drink the paint water” and other fun artist sayings.
