We use our sketchbook to map out ideas with images. You should always do that every chance you get, but in addition to that, try writing down every weird/random/terrible idea you have for a painting. Frog on a shoe? What if there were flowers growing out of the shoe? What if there was a hole in a boot the frog was sitting on and water was pouring out?
Start jotting down single-sentence ideas for a painting. Let one idea morph into another. It doesn’t matter how basic or even terrible the idea is. Write it down. Our creativity is a muscle that needs to be worked in order to develop strong ideas. Its going to atrophy if you spend your time waiting for ideas to hit while you play video games or watch tv. This exercise can do just that while taking very little time.
We all need to be reminded “Don’t drink the paint water” and other fun artist sayings.
Why not wear it on our clothes or coffee mugs to make sure we don’t forget? LachriMerch.com
