Do you find yourself having trouble coming up with ideas for your work time and time again? Why not choose a single element and base multiple paintings around that theme? A rose, an octopus, a chickadee, heck…even a fork will do. Your job is to simply find a way to fit that single element into a painting in a different way each time.

Sometimes we get so hung up on coming up with the perfect idea that we waste so much time that could be spent creating art. If you know that each of your next 10 paintings will include a fork, that gives you a huge head start in coming up with your next unique idea. You have something to build around! Each painting can feel totally different, but they all have that ONE thing to tie them together.

Can’t think of a random element to use? Try a random word generator (just do a google search). You can even keep it simple and keep this limited to sketchbook ideas. The point is, you’re working instead of thinking up ideas and you’re keeping those creative ideas growing!

We all need to be reminded “Don’t drink the paint water”  and other fun artist sayings.
